The Sosabowski Men – Joop van Dijk

Instrumentation: Brass Band
Duration: 4’00
Grade: 5

The Sosabowski Men is a fast concert march. The march is a musical tribute to General Stanislaw Sosabowski and his 1st Independent Polish Parachute Brigade.

On May 31, 2006, Queen Beatrix awarded the Military Order of William to the 1st Independent Polish Parachute Brigade at the Binnenhof in The Hague. Major General Stanislaw Sosabowski, who headed this unit, was posthumously awarded the Bronze Lion. The awards were presented as a reward for their efforts during Operation Market Garden in September 1944.
After the failed operation Market Garden or the Battle of Arnhem, Sosabowski and his brigade were wrongly used as scapegoats by the Allied Commander-in-Chief Montgomery. Sosabowski was even removed from office. It was not until long after the Second World War that rehabilitation followed for the very heroic Poles who, despite all the opposition from the British army command, distinguished themselves heroically in the battle around the bridges over the Rhine.

The Sosabowski Men was composed for Altena Brass for participation in the Dutch Open Brass Band Championships. The premiere by Altena Brass, conducted by Michael Engelbrecht, took place on April 20, 2019 in ’t Uivernest in Hank.
