In 2010 I was commissioned to write the test piece for the B – Division of the European Brass Band Championships 2012 to be held in The Doelen in Rotterdam. For the main theme of this test piece, I used a hymn tune I wrote during a sleepless night in the spring of 2011. Looking out of the window of my study room while composing this hymn tune, I realised that the only light in that dark night was coming from my study. The title of the test piece ‘Light in the darkness’ refers to this moment.
In 2010 kreeg ik de opdracht om het proefstuk te schrijven voor de B-divisie van de Europese Brassbandkampioenschappen 2012 in De Doelen in Rotterdam. Voor het hoofdthema van dit proefstuk gebruikte ik een hymne die ik schreef tijdens een slapeloze nacht in het voorjaar van 2011. Terwijl ik uit het raam van mijn studeerkamer keek terwijl ik deze hymne componeerde, realiseerde ik me dat het enige licht in die donkere De nacht kwam uit mijn studeerkamer. De titel van het proefstuk ‘Licht in de duisternis’ verwijst naar dit moment.
